Journaliste, musicien et révolutionnaire autrichien né à Manchester, en Angleterre, en 1803 (ou 1805), mort à Vienne le 23 novembre 1848. Après des études de droit à Heidelberg, Göttingen et Berlin, il se tourne vers des idées socialistes radicales, puis vers la peinture et la musique à Düsseldorf, où il reste jusqu'en 1838, date à laquelle il est nommé professeur de théorie musicale à l'université de La Haye. En 1841, il se produit à Vienne comme interprète de ses propres compositions ; au printemps 1848, il prend la tête des radicaux viennois et dirige le journal révolutionnaire « Der Radikale », avant d'être jugé pour trahison et exécuté.
