Juriste hongrois né le 27 mars 1850 à Budapest, où il achève ses études. Après un séjour à l'étranger, il est admis au barreau en 1882 et devient en 1885 chargé de cours de droit pénal à l'université de Budapest. Entré au service de l'État, il est nommé juge du tribunal de Budapest en 1886, puis procureur en 1896, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'en 1898, date à laquelle il est nommé chef de division au ministère royal de la Justice ; il participe activement à l'organisation du Congrès international de procédure pénale tenu à Budapest en 1899.
