Auteur chrétien d'une théologie de l'Ancien Testament, né à Hippolstein, en Bavière, le 14 août 1755, mort le 13 janvier 1806. Nommé en 1789 professeur de philosophie et de langues orientales à l'université d'Altdorf, puis en 1805 professeur à l'université de Heidelberg, où il mourut, il fut l'un des représentants actifs du rationalisme des Lumières. Son ouvrage « Theologie des Alten Testaments », paru anonymement en 1796 et fondé sur les travaux de son collègue Johann Philipp Gabler de 1787, fait de lui le premier à avoir produit une théologie de l'Ancien Testament ; il le poursuivit par d'autres volumes en 1801 et 1802.
