Érudit anglais spécialiste de la Bible et de l'hébreu, né vers 1711, mort à Arundel le 20 janvier 1771. Formé au St John's College de Cambridge, où il obtint sa maîtrise en 1740, il s'intéressa particulièrement à l'Ancien Testament, entrant en controverse avec l'évêque Warburton au sujet de sa « Divine Legation of Moses » et avec Kennicott sur les variantes du texte hébreu que ce dernier avait publiées. Parmi ses ouvrages figurent un dictionnaire hébreu-anglais sans points-voyelles et une traduction du Pentateuque et des livres historiques jusqu'à la fin du second livre des Rois, parue en 1773.
