Compositeur et musicographe italien né à Livourne le 29 décembre 1818, mort à Florence en novembre 1885. D'abord médecin à Florence, il se consacre ensuite entièrement à la musique et compose notamment les opéras « Romilda ed Ezzelino » (1840) et « Enrico Howard » (1847). Fondateur des « Beethoven Matinées » en 1859, à l'origine de la Società del Quartetto, puis des Concerti Popolari di Musica Classica en 1863, il est aussi l'auteur d'ouvrages sur Verdi (1859) et sur l'histoire de la musique (1866).
