Professeur de philosophie à l'université de Rennes, né à Budapest, en Hongrie, en 1863, et fils de Raphaël Basch. Installé en France dès l'enfance, il étudie à la Sorbonne puis est nommé professeur à l'université de Nancy en 1885, puis à celle de Rennes en 1887. Chef de file des dreyfusards à Rennes, il subit une violente hostilité antisémite mais défend avec constance les principes de justice légale et sociale ; il publie notamment « L'Esthétique de Kant » à Paris en 1896.
