Médecin autrichien né à Prague le 9 septembre 1837, connu comme le médecin personnel de l'empereur Maximilien du Mexique, qu'il accompagna jusqu'à sa mort en 1867. Formé aux universités de Prague et de Vienne, il fut jusqu'en 1865 assistant de plusieurs professeurs à l'université de Vienne, avant d'être nommé chirurgien en chef de l'hôpital militaire de Puebla, au Mexique. Anobli par l'empereur François-Joseph pour son rôle auprès de Maximilien, il devint en 1870 chargé de cours de pathologie expérimentale à l'université de Vienne.
