Médecin américain né à Schwersenz, en Prusse, le 29 juillet 1840, il émigre aux États-Unis et obtient son diplôme de médecine en 1862, puis sert trois ans dans l'armée confédérée pendant la guerre de Sécession. Installé à New York en 1881, il devient un pionnier de la chirurgie de l'appendicite et un spécialiste reconnu de l'hydrothérapie.
