L'un des tout premiers colons juifs de la Nouvelle-Amsterdam (New York), arrivé au port sur le navire « Pear Tree » le 8 juillet 1654, probablement de Hollande — ce qui fait de lui le plus ancien colon juif identifié sur le territoire actuel de l'État de New York. Homme de moyens modestes selon les registres fiscaux, il n'hésitait pas à faire valoir ses droits devant les tribunaux : en 1658, il obtint du tribunal municipal hollandais qu'aucun jugement par défaut ne soit prononcé contre lui pour avoir été cité à comparaître un samedi, jour de son sabbat.
