Acteur allemand, né à Budapest le 12 février 1842, fils du secrétaire de la congrégation juive de la ville, il se destinait au bâtiment mais convainquit son père de l'envoyer étudier le théâtre à Vienne sous Sonnenthal. Après des débuts difficiles en 1860 à Trautenau, en Bohême, et une brouille avec son père, il se réconcilia avec lui et fut invité en 1863 par Heinrich Laube à rejoindre le Burgtheater de Vienne, invitation qu'il déclina. Il se produisit ensuite à Riga (1865), à Leipzig (1867) et à Francfort-sur-le-Main à partir de 1870, où il organisa en juillet 1871 le congrès théâtral de Weimar, à l'origine de l'union des artistes de la scène allemande.
