« Roi du diamant », promoteur et spéculateur anglais, né à Londres le 5 juillet 1852 et mort suicidé en sautant du paquebot « Scot » le 14 juin 1897, formé à la Jews' Free School de Spitalfields, il rejoignit en 1873 son frère aux mines de diamants de Kimberley, en Afrique du Sud, où il adopta le nom de « Barnato ». Devenu marchand de diamants dès 1874, il s'enrichit grâce à des concessions acquises en 1876 et ouvrit une maison de financiers à Londres en 1880. Élu à l'Assemblée du Cap pour Kimberley en 1888 et réélu en 1894, il connut en 1895 un sommet de popularité avant que des revers boursiers ne précipitent sa chute.
