Talmudiste et rabbin, né vers 1725 à Barby, près de Halberstadt, en Prusse, et mort le 28 juillet 1789 à Presbourg, il devint dayyan puis, en 1756, rabbin en exercice à Halberstadt jusqu'en 1763, avant de prendre la tête du rabbinat et de la yeshiva de Presbourg, qu'il conserva vingt-cinq ans. Considéré comme l'un des plus grands dialecticiens de son temps, d'où son surnom de « Ḥarif », il publia ses novellæ talmudiques, le « Sefer Ḥiddushe Halakhot » (Dyhrenfurth-Prague, 1786-92), et se distingua par son intérêt, rare chez un talmudiste de son temps, pour la médecine et les études profanes.
