Born in East Berlin in 1949 to Jewish immigrant parents, she was a playwright and director before emigrating to Strasbourg in 1984, where she reconnects with Jewish life. She is considered the most significant German-language Jewish writer of post-Shoah generations. Laureate of the Kleist, Max-Frisch, and Jakob-Wassermann prizes.
