Auteur et médecin roumain, né à Brody, en Galicie, en 1815, et mort à Bucarest le 31 mars 1863, marié contre son gré à seize ans puis ruiné par de mauvaises spéculations, il émigra en Allemagne étudier la médecine et fut reçu docteur à Berlin en 1841. Il s'établit à Bucarest en novembre 1841, devint médecin de quarantaine à Calarași en 1843, puis médecin en chef du district de Dolj de 1847 à 1851. Dès ses études, il publia en 1839 un essai sur le hassidisme polonais, se fit le chroniqueur de la vie des Juifs des principautés roumaines, puis se consacra à créer une terminologie scientifique roumaine, publiant en 1850 son premier ouvrage de vulgarisation.
