Acteur germano-américain, né à Cassel, en Allemagne, en 1840, il débuta à dix-huit ans au théâtre de la cour de Neustrelitz, jouant surtout Shakespeare en allemand, avant de quitter l'Allemagne en 1863 pour les États-Unis, où il se fit connaître notamment dans le rôle de Shylock. Il se produisit à Londres à partir de 1868 — au Lyceum dans « Narciss » de Brachvogel, puis dans « The Rightful Heir » et « Othello » —, joua Hamlet au Princess Theater en 1873, puis se consacra surtout à des tournées aux États-Unis, où il acquit un ranch, apparaissant encore en 1901 dans une version réduite du « Marchand de Venise ».
