Rabbin allemand, né à Angenrod, dans le grand-duché de Hesse-Darmstadt, le 5 novembre 1834, et mort à Königsberg le 26 octobre 1896, formé à l'université de Giessen puis au séminaire théologique juif de Breslau, il fut reçu docteur et rabbin en 1861 et appelé en 1865 à Königsberg, à la tête de la communauté réformée, où il resta jusqu'à sa mort. Il se distingua par son dévouement envers les Juifs russes affluant à Königsberg après 1882, fondant de nombreuses œuvres philanthropiques et éducatives, et fut l'un des créateurs du Deutsch-Israelitischer Gemeindebund et du Deutscher Rabbiner-Verein, qu'il présida plusieurs fois.
