Graveur danois, né à Vejle, dans le Jutland, le 22 mars 1822, et mort à Copenhague le 21 mars 1885, il se destinait d'abord à la peinture avant de se tourner vers une nouvelle technique de reproduction, le chemitype, qui l'amena à Leipzig en 1846 puis à Paris en 1848, où il perfectionna son art de la gravure. Il obtint la médaille d'or de troisième classe à l'exposition de Paris de 1861 et fut fait chevalier du Dannebrog en 1862 ; installé à Londres de 1870 à 1883, il fut élu membre de l'Académie de Copenhague en 1877 avant d'y être rappelé en 1883 comme professeur de jeunes graveurs.
