Médecin allemand, né à Ratibor, en Prusse, le 24 mai 1848, privat-docent des maladies de l'oreille, du nez et du larynx à l'université de Berlin puis professeur honoraire, il y étudia la médecine et obtint son doctorat en 1870, année où il servit comme médecin militaire pendant la guerre franco-prussienne. Après la guerre, il se spécialisa dans les maladies de l'oreille, du nez et du larynx, auxquelles il se consacra entièrement à partir de 1880, devint docent d'otologie, de rhinologie et de laryngologie à Berlin quatre ans plus tard, puis professeur honoraire en 1897 ; il publia de nombreux travaux scientifiques dans ce domaine.
