Pédagogue allemand, né à Nakel, dans la province de Posen, le 7 novembre 1828, formé aux gymnases de Konitz et de Breslau puis à l'université de Berlin, où Leopold von Ranke s'intéressa à lui, il partit en 1856 pour Vienne avant d'être rappelé trois ans plus tard à Berlin, au séminaire des maîtres juifs. En 1868, la communauté juive de Francfort-sur-le-Main l'appela à diriger son école « Philanthropin » pour garçons et filles, poste qu'il occupa trente et un ans avec un dévouement reconnu de tous ; il fut aussi membre du comité central de l'Alliance israélite universelle à Paris.
