Spécialiste de la Massore et éditeur de la Bible hébraïque, né à Mosbach, en Bade, le 18 septembre 1825, et mort à Biebrich-sur-le-Rhin en mars 1897, il commença ses études massorétiques dès 1844 et devint l'un des meilleurs connaisseurs de cette discipline, sans jamais occuper de poste universitaire — seulement celui de professeur d'hébreu à Biebrich. Avec Franz Delitzsch, il entreprit une nouvelle édition massorétique de l'Ancien Testament hébraïque, publiée à Leipzig de 1869 à 1895, les deux derniers volumes ayant été établis par lui seul après la mort de Delitzsch en 1890.
