Baer de Meseritz, dit le Maggid, est le premier apôtre du hassidisme et son plus important propagateur, né en Volhynie en 1710 et mort à Meseritz le 15 décembre 1772. Formé, comme il était alors d'usage en Pologne, au Talmud et à la littérature rabbinique, il prêcha à Rowno puis à Meseritz et, sans jamais être rabbin, s'imposa comme talmudiste accompli; converti au système kabbalistique de Luria et grand admirateur de Moïse Ḥayyim Luzzatto, il mena une vie ascétique — jeûnes fréquents, dénuement, prières en larmes — qui, jointe à sa pauvreté, finit par le rendre infirme et le conduisit à chercher secours auprès du Besht.
