Commentateur biblique et rabbinique, mort à Wilna en 1807, il était le frère d'Éliahou ben Salomon, le Gaon de Wilna, et se distinguait comme lui par la simplicité et la clarté de ses commentaires. Outre la Bible et le Talmud, il étudia les mathématiques et la géographie ; son commentaire sur le Pentateuque — dont le manuscrit a été brûlé quelques années auparavant — suivait une double méthode, d'abord le sens littéral à la manière de Rachi, d'Ibn Ezra et de Nahmanide, puis une lecture philosophique et parfois mystique. Il laissa aussi un commentaire sur le Talmud et le Shoulhan Aroukh.
