Chantre, musicien et compositeur allemand, né en Russie le 26 décembre 1834 et mort à Göteborg, en Suède, le 7 mars 1894, il renonça au rabbinat voulu par son père pour se consacrer au chant synagogal, officiant d'abord en Prusse-Occidentale avant d'être appelé à vingt-trois ans, en 1857, à Göteborg. Après quinze années de recherches sur les mélodies traditionnelles juives, il publia en 1871 le « Ba'al Tefillah, oder der Practische Vorbeter », une collection quasi complète de ces mélodies rééditée, augmentée, en 1883.
