Dramaturge et romancier allemand, né à Ragnit, en Prusse orientale, le 8 août 1810, il étudia la médecine à Königsberg et y exerça comme médecin à partir de 1837, avant d'abandonner cette carrière après dix ans pour se consacrer entièrement à la littérature. Sa production, interrompue par les événements de 1848, reprit ensuite avec des drames et des romans historiques, dont « Sybilla von Kleve » (1865) et « Napoleon I. Letzte Liebe » (1868), parmi une œuvre abondante publiée depuis Berlin.
