Peintre allemand, né à Potsdam en mai 1756 et mort à Breslau le 8 avril 1829 (1826 selon d'autres sources), il reçut sa première formation du peintre potsdamois A. B. Krüger avant d'entrer, grâce à l'influence du colonel Guichard, à l'Académie des arts de Berlin. Protégé du comte Jean Potocki, il voyagea et étudia quatre ans (1786-1792) en Italie, notamment à Rome et à Portici, fut élu membre de l'Académie de Florence en 1788, puis nommé en 1792 directeur et professeur de l'Académie des beaux-arts de Breslau et membre de celle de Berlin en 1794.
