Après avoir dirigé la yeshiva de Slonim selon l'étude lituanienne, il fut influencé par Noah de Lachowicze et Moïse de Kobrin et fonda la cour hassidique de Slonim. Son œuvre Yesod ha-Avodah est l'un des rares livres hassidiques bâti non sur les péricopes mais comme un traité systématique des fondements de la 'avodah. En 1873 il envoya un groupe de ses hassidim s'établir à Tibériade, ce qui assura la survie de la dynastie après la Shoah.
