Né à Alep, il fut halakhiste, kabbaliste et publiciste. Il composa près d'une cinquantaine d'ouvrages (16 imprimés), beaucoup consacrés aux segulot (remèdes spirituels), amulettes, interprétation des songes et pratiques ésotériques, compilés à partir de manuscrits qu'il collecta lors de voyages en Europe (bibliothèques italiennes). Plusieurs de ses livres furent imprimés à Livourne. Il mourut et fut enterré à Bushehr, en Perse.
