Born in Będzin in 1838, son-in-law of the rebbe of Kotsk, he became one of the greatest decisors (poskim) of the late 19th century. From 1883 he was rabbi and av beit din of Sochaczew, founding the Sochatchov dynasty. His son Shmuel, author of the Shem Mishmuel, succeeded him.
