Médecin et philosophe de renom, né à Boukhara en 980, mort en 1037. Ses œuvres, parvenues en Espagne environ cent ans après leur publication, exercent une grande influence sur la pensée juive au Moyen Âge ; ses recherches philosophiques sont rassemblées dans un vaste ouvrage encyclopédique, l'« Al-Chifa » (La Guérison), dont la traduction latine fut préparée avec l'aide d'interprètes juifs et utilisée notamment par Samuel ibn Tibbon. Elle se divise en quatre parties : logique, physique, mathématiques et métaphysique. À côté du « Chifa », une encyclopédie plus courte, l'« Al-Nadjah », fut traduite en 1330 par Todros Todrosi à Rome sous le titre « La Guérison de l'âme ».
