Éducateur et auteur, né à Emmendingen, en Bade, le 14 novembre 1810, mort le 31 octobre 1887. Il reçoit sa première formation à Carlsruhe, où, à l'automne 1827, il rencontre son cousin — et futur beau-frère — Berthold Auerbach, le célèbre romancier, avec lequel se noue une amitié étroite et durable. Contraint par des difficultés financières d'abandonner ses études à l'université de Heidelberg, il est secouru par Berthold ; appelé à Wiesbaden comme enseignant religieux, il devient l'un des disciples enthousiastes d'Abraham Geiger. Appelé à Francfort-sur-le-Main en 1842, il y consacre près de quarante ans à l'enseignement religieux, notamment au gymnase après 1848.
