Écrivain allemand, né dans le village de la Forêt-Noire de Nordstetten, en Allemagne, le 28 février 1812, mort à Cannes, en France, le 8 février 1882. Destiné par son père à la carrière rabbinique, il est envoyé, dans sa douzième année, à l'école talmudique de Hechingen puis à Karlsruhe pour parfaire sa formation. Il abandonne toutefois ses études talmudiques pour se consacrer aux matières profanes, prépare l'université à l'Obergymnasium de Stuttgart, puis étudie le droit à Tübingen (1832) ; sous l'influence de David Friedrich Strauss, auteur du « Leben Jesu », il change alors le cours de ses études.
