Rabbin allemand, né à Buxweiler, en Alsace, au milieu du XVIIIe siècle, mort à Bonn le 3 novembre 1846. Issu d'une ancienne famille rabbinique, destiné dès l'enfance au rabbinat, il est formé d'abord par son grand-père à Worms, puis par son oncle David Sinzheim, futur président du consistoire central à Paris, auprès duquel il acquiert une vaste connaissance talmudique ainsi qu'une formation profane. À Strasbourg, où une communauté juive se forme grâce aux efforts de Cerfberr de Medelsheim, Auerbach en reçoit la charge ; au déclenchement de la Terreur, sa proximité avec Cerfberr lui vaut d'être emprisonné une année entière.
