Violoniste hongrois, fils d'un modeste peintre en bâtiment, né à Veszprém, en Hongrie, le 7 juin 1845. Formé d'abord par Ridley Kolene au conservatoire de Budapest, il se rend ensuite au conservatoire de Vienne, où il étudie avec Dont (1857-58), puis achève sa formation avec Joachim à Berlin. Il est chef d'orchestre à Düsseldorf de 1863 à 1865, puis à Hambourg de 1866 à 1868, avant de succéder à Wieniawski comme professeur de violon au conservatoire de Saint-Pétersbourg. Nommé soliste des théâtres impériaux en 1873, avec le titre de « soliste de la cour du tsar », il dirige ensuite les concerts des chanteurs de la cour impériale (1880-81).
