Auteur et poète, né le 4 août 1862 à Munich, en Allemagne, petit-fils du rabbin Hirsch Aub de Munich. Lorsque son père, l'avocat Max Aub, est rappelé à Munich depuis la petite ville d'Uffenheim, en Franconie, Ludwig entre au gymnase de sa ville natale. Dès l'enfance, il manifeste un amour des livres qui le conduit à travailler chez différents libraires de Vienne et de Leipzig, jusqu'à devenir lui-même marchand de livres rares, ce qui lui donne une connaissance approfondie de la littérature allemande moderne. Une grave affection des yeux l'oblige malheureusement à abandonner son commerce et contrarie sa carrière littéraire.
