Médecin et auteur médical italien, né à Vérone le 21 juin 1802, mort à Venise le 2 décembre 1877. Son père meurt alors qu'il est encore enfant, et c'est un oncle qui se charge de son éducation ; il fréquente l'académie de sa ville natale puis les universités de Padoue et de Pavie, complétant sa formation à Milan. Diplômé docteur en médecine en 1825, il retourne exercer à Vérone jusqu'en 1831, année où il s'installe à Venise ; il y bâtit une large clientèle et devient l'un des principaux chirurgiens du nord de l'Italie. Lors de l'épidémie de choléra de 1835, il ouvre un hôpital auxiliaire à Saint-Thomas et devient chirurgien en chef de l'hôpital municipal en 1840.
