Médecin et poète allemand, né à Königsberg en 1787, mort le 25 avril 1842. Il étudie aux universités de Tübingen, Halle, Vienne et Göttingen, où il obtient son doctorat le 26 août 1807, avec une thèse sur les aliments et les lois chimico-dynamiques, publiée à Göttingen en 1809. Quelques années plus tard, il se rend à Hambourg pour y exercer la médecine, mais la guerre de libération de l'Allemagne contre Napoléon éclate presque aussitôt, et il s'engage comme médecin de cavalerie, servant d'abord dans l'armée russe puis dans l'armée prussienne. En 1815, il retourne à Hambourg par amour pour Rosa Maria Varnhagen.
