Médecin allemand, né le 8 septembre 1866 à Stallupönen, en Prusse-Orientale. Formé au gymnase Kneiphof puis à l'université de Königsberg, où il obtient son doctorat de médecine en 1892, il rejoint la même année l'hôpital universitaire comme assistant junior, devient premier assistant en 1894, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'en 1899, année où il se retire pour se consacrer à sa pratique privée croissante ; il est nommé chargé de cours à l'université en 1897. Il contribue à plusieurs revues médicales sur l'examen des patients pour l'assurance-accidents et le diagnostic clinique.
