Soldat beni-israël, né près de Bombay, en Inde, vers 1820. Il entre au service du huitième régiment d'infanterie indigène le 5 mars 1839, participe à la poursuite de l'armée rebelle de Tantia Topee au Gujarat en 1857-58, sert dans une force de campagne contre les Bheels de Niakara, dans le district de Rewa Kanta, et avait auparavant pris part à la campagne du Sind en 1842, y compris la marche sur Kandahar, ainsi qu'en Abyssinie. Nommé jemadar en 1856, il devient subedar en 1858 puis subedar-major en 1870 ; il reçoit l'ordre de l'Inde britannique avec le titre de bahadur en 1872, puis celui de sirdar bahadur en 1877.
