Talmudiste et auteur, né en Galicie vers 1778, mort à Safed, en Palestine, en 1857. Rabbin à Tolcsva, en Hongrie, de 1803 à 1843, il émigre ensuite en Palestine et s'installe définitivement à Safed. Il publie à Jérusalem, en 1844, son œuvre maîtresse, le « Toledot Adam » (Les Générations d'Adam), novellæ sur plusieurs traités du Talmud de Babylone, préfacée par les approbations de Jacob de Lissa et de Jacob Orenstein, qui le considèrent comme leur égal. Son second ouvrage, le « Beer Shéva », recueil de dissertations homilétiques sur le Pentateuque, paraît à Jérusalem en 1852 ; ses deux fils, Joël et Salomon, furent rabbins en Galicie, ce dernier mourant à Jérusalem en 1862.
