Militant communautaire et philanthrope russe, né en 1824, mort à Grodno en 1894, fils de Josué Heschel Ashkenazi, rabbin de Lublin et descendant du Ḥakham Tsevi. Établi à Grodno, où il devient la figure dominante des affaires communautaires, il fait construire un hôpital puis un foyer pour personnes âgées, ce qui lui vaut, avec ses enfants, la citoyenneté honoraire héréditaire. En 1882, il est délégué au congrès rabbinique de Saint-Pétersbourg ; en 1883, l'un des rares représentants juifs officiels au couronnement d'Alexandre III à Moscou ; en 1884, président du comité des prisons du gouvernement de Grodno.
