Médecin allemand, né le 13 avril 1865 à Leipzig, fils du docteur David Asher, longtemps secrétaire du grand rabbin Nathan M. Adler à Londres. Diplômé de médecine après des études à Leipzig de 1885 à 1890, il se rend en 1891 à Heidelberg comme assistant de laboratoire, devient en 1894 assistant à l'Institut de physiologie de Berne, puis privat-docent en 1895 ; il passe les étés de 1896 à 98 dans le laboratoire du physiologiste Hering, avant d'être nommé, en 1901, professeur de médecine à l'université de Berne.
