Médecin, né le 16 février 1837 à Glasgow, en Écosse, mort le 7 janvier 1889 à Londres, premier Juif d'Écosse à entrer dans la profession médicale. Il se rend à Londres en 1862, devient médecin du Jewish Board of Guardians, puis secrétaire de la Grande Synagogue en 1866 ; il consacre son énergie au projet d'union des synagogues londoniennes, devenant en mars 1871 le premier secrétaire de la United Synagogue, fonction qu'il conserve jusqu'à sa mort. Proche des Rothschild, dont il est le médecin, il accompagne aussi Samuel Montagu en Palestine, en Amérique et en Russie, et publie « The Jewish Rite of Circumcision » (Londres, 1873).
