Médecin et chirurgien écossais, né à Édimbourg en 1817, mort en Jamaïque le 26 novembre 1858. Formé dans sa ville natale, licencié du Royal College of Surgeons d'Édimbourg, il complète sa formation à Paris et à Berlin avant d'exercer quelque temps à Londres, où il collabore activement à la presse anglo-juive. Il émigre en Jamaïque en 1843, s'installant à Kingston, où il exerce jusqu'en 1850, puis à Falmouth, sur la côte nord de l'île, où il rend d'importants services lors d'une épidémie de choléra et milite pour la réforme sanitaire et la vaccination obligatoire.
