Talmudiste, né à Semiatitch, en Russie, vers 1813, mort à New York le 6 mai 1888. Arrivé aux États-Unis en 1852, il contribue à fonder à New York la première congrégation russo-américaine, le Beth ha-Midrash ha-Gadol, dont il est élu rabbin huit ans plus tard, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa mort, à l'exception de brèves tentatives d'affaires pour échapper à la dépendance financière du rabbinat. Il s'oppose vivement, en 1886, à la tentative de certains rabbins réformés de prêcher dans des synagogues orthodoxes, publiant une protestation ouverte.
