Born in Genoa in 1842 "da famiglia ebraica" (from a Jewish family), son of Raffaele Issel and Elisa Sonsino. Professor of mineralogy and then geology at the University of Genoa (chair from 1866, ordinarius from 1876). He first defined the Tyrrhenian stage (1914) and left a vast body of work on the geology, prehistory and malacology of Liguria. He married in 1873 Bettina Ascoli, daughter of linguist Graziadio Isaia Ascoli; his son Raffaele Issel was a professor of zoology in Genoa.
