Born in Le Havre on June 16, 1844, into a modest Jewish family (grandson of a rabbi), Arthur Meyer directed the fashionable and conservative daily Le Gaulois. A paradoxical figure — royalist, anti-Dreyfusard, converted to Catholicism — he was one of the most prominent personalities of the Parisian press under the Third Republic and left memoirs. He died in Paris on February 2, 1924.

Journaliste français; né au Havre en 1846. Étant encore jeune, il se rendit à Paris et acheta et dirigea la « Revue de Paris », qui cependant fut bientôt discontinuée. Pendant près de vingt ans, il reportait pour « Le Gaulois » et « Paris Journal », devenant, en 1868, copropriétaire du premier, qu'il fit l'organe des Bonapartistes. Quand le Prince Louis mourut en 1879, Meyer quitta le « Gaulois » et acheta le « Paris Journal », peu après « Le Gaulois », et finalement le « Clairon ». Les trois journaux qu'il fusionna alors sous le nom du « Gaulois » et en fit l'organe principal du parti Clérical-Monarchique. Meyer fut l'un des adversaires les plus véhéments du capitaine Dreyfus.
