Né au Havre le 16 juin 1844 dans une modeste famille juive (petit-fils de rabbin), Arthur Meyer dirigea le quotidien mondain et conservateur Le Gaulois. Figure paradoxale — royaliste, antidreyfusard, converti au catholicisme —, il fut l'une des personnalités les plus en vue de la presse parisienne sous la IIIe République et laissa des mémoires. Il mourut à Paris le 2 février 1924.
