Chimiste allemand, né le 25 mai 1841 à Telgte, en Westphalie, diplômé de l'université de Göttingen en 1864. Il devient peu après assistant au département de physique de l'université de Leyde, en Hollande, puis, en 1867, directeur de l'école supérieure de Breda, dans le Brabant, où il enseigne aussi les sciences naturelles. Nommé en 1876 professeur de chimie à l'Académie militaire royale de Breda, il accepte en 1894 un poste équivalent à l'École polytechnique royale de Delft, qu'il occupe depuis lors. Ses travaux, de caractère technique, paraissent notamment dans les « Annalen der Chemie » de Liebig.
