Born in Vienna in a modest Jewish family (Hungarian father, mother from a Jewish family of Prague), he is one of the great modernists of the twentieth century, at the origin of the emancipation of dissonance and twelve-tone composition (method of the twelve tones). He taught at the Prussian Academy of the Arts (1925–1933) and then, after his exile, at UCLA (1936–1944). Died in Los Angeles in 1951.
