Born in Riga in 1911 in a Jewish family of the Russian Empire, he was the most famous Soviet humorist and satirist of the twentieth century, a figure on the stage for nearly half a century. He founded the theater that would become the Satyricon. Winner of the Lenin Prize (1980) and People's Artist of the USSR (1968).
