Le plus grand mathématicien de l'Antiquité, né à Syracuse vers 287 av. J.-C. Son influence sur la littérature juive reste limitée : seuls deux de ses ouvrages nous sont parvenus en traduction hébraïque. Kalonymus ben Kalonymus (après 1306) traduisit à deux reprises le traité « Sur les conoïdes et les sphéroïdes » en hébreu, prétendument à partir d'une traduction arabe de Costa ben Louca — bien que les bibliographes arabes n'en connaissent aucune trace. Abraham bar Ḥiyya témoigne d'une connaissance parfaite des théories d'Archimède dans son « Encyclopédie des sciences mathématiques », de même qu'Abraham ibn Ezra dans son ouvrage astronomique « Reshit Ḥokhma ».
